  • SQL Readability: Some argue that singular table names lead to more natural and readable SQL queries, especially when dealing with JOIN operations. For example, SELECT * FROM user JOIN order ON = order.user_id reads as “select everything from user join order on user id equals order user id”, which can be more intuitive.

Plural Table Names

  • Entity Set Representation: Tables are collections of entities, and using plural names can emphasize the table as a container holding multiple instances of a type. This approach mirrors how entities are often stored in collections (like lists or arrays) in programming, where the collection names are plural.
  • Intuitive Understanding: For many, plural names can more intuitively convey that tables hold multiple records of a certain type, making it clearer when conceptualizing the database structure that a table like users contains many user entities.

  • Consistency: Above all, consistency within a project or across an organization’s projects is crucial. Whether you choose singular or plural names, applying the decision uniformly helps maintain clarity and reduces confusion for anyone working with the database.
